  MATCH TOTAL 7.5 2.5

The match was set up well with the first four matches very evenly matched. Playing match-play off scratch the last six matches had Suffolk looking hot favourites.

The first match saw Joshua Murton (captain) produce a very good performance to beat Nathan Jackson 4 & 3 and in the second match Jack Phillips won two out of the last three holes to get a commendable half against Tom Forster. Christopher Lee had a convincing 4 & 3 win over Jamie Sandford and Lewis Whiting lost his grip on his game, loosing the 17th hole to give Cambridge's Cameron Shakespear their second half of the afternoon. Jordan Bloomfield started poorly and was soon four down against David Marris and although his game improved Marris held on to win 4 & 3. Jed Seeley played good golf to beat Toby Carr 4 & 3 while Will Morecombe give away a three shot lead to give Cambridgeshire another half  point against Jai Patel. The last three games all went Suffolk's way with wins for Ben Sayers 2up, Laurence Staff 6 & 5 and Marcus Ridley 1up. Sayers win was even more pleasing especially after he had been 5 down at one point during his game.

Ian Woodhead

After 6 years at the helm Ian Woodhead has stepped down as Suffolk under 12's manager to concentrate his efforts on the Under 14's.

During this time Ian has been responsible for bringing through many players who have subsequently gone on to represent the County at under 18 and senior level. Mike Stevenson, Chair of Suffolk Junior Golf, praised Ian for his dedication and committment. John Morecombe has agreed to step into the role and we wish him all the best for the future.

On the hottest October day for many years the Suffolk Under 12's came up short against a more experienced Cambridgeshire team. In glorious sunshine at Newton Green the Cambridgeshire team took an early 2 shot lead in the foursomes, only to be pegged back by Everett & Hurrens half, Watts & Clough win and Iveson & Frickers half.

With a 1 point advantage after the foursomes Cambridgeshires lead teams soon put another 2 points on the board to give a 3 points lead after the first 3 singles matches. With wins for Orris, Everett and Hurren the match was all square with 4 singles matches left. The last 4 matches all went the way of Cambridgeshire and they recorded their first win against Suffolk in the six matches that have been played in the last 3 years.

The Under 12's Suffolk team has been managed by Ian Woodhead for the last 6 years. this was his last match as manager and the new role now passes to John Morcombe, allowing Ian the chance concentrate more of his time to the Under 14's squad.

SUFFOLK UNDER 14'S v NORFOLK UNDER 14'S

On a very wet day in Sudbury, Suffolk hosted the annual under 14's match against Norfolk at Newton Green Golf Club. With a very much changed team Suffolk started positively with a 3 & 2 win in the foursomes for captain Joshua Murton & partner Jed Seeley, however Jai Gayle and Christopher Lee lost 3 & 2. Suffolk were back leading 15 minutes later when Jordan Bloomfield & Lewis Whiting had a convincing win 3 & 2, which again was followed by a defeat for Will Morcombe & Laurence Staff. The result of the morning foursomes rested on the shoulders of the two new team members Michael Gee & Jack Cuthbert. The match could have gone either way and eventually was halved, leaving the teams sharing the spoils after the morning foursomes.

The start of the afternoon singles saw the sun come out and the match resumed without umbrellas and waterproofs, this was not to last long and by the time the players had got round to the 10th the heavens had opened. This did not dampen the spirits of the more experienced players and Murton, Whiting, Bloomfield and Staff soon recorderd positive wins and with halved matches for Lee and new boy Cuthbert the result looked to be going Suffolk's way. The remaining two matches saw 2 & 1 victories for both new boys Jai Gayle and Michael Gee, Gayle's result even more outstanding as he had been four down at half way.

The excellent performance of the three new boys, Cuthbert, Gee & Gayle bodes well for the future.

Support was given by the County President Mike Rees and Junior Chairman Mike Stevenson.

Suffolk boys were thwarted in their attempt to retain the Junior Anglian League title when they went down by 8-4 to Leicestershire and Rutland boys at Eaton Golf Club, Norwich.

The morning foursomes were extremely closely contested with Suffolk winning one game, the other 3, whilst all going to the 18th green, resulted in wins for Leicester and Rutland.

Suffolk boys tried hard in the singles, but a combination of a hot day and fatigue following an exremely busy schedule saw them only manage wins from Chris Vince, Sam Jaggard and Guy Mummery.

ESSEX v SUFFOLK - The Anglian Shield ( Under 14 County Match at Harwich & Dovercourt)

The Suffolk team narrowly lost to Essex on a day that they should have won the Anglian Shield for the first time in ten years. After a very positive start from Murton & Seely with a 2up win in the foursomes and a narrow defeat for Phillips and Lee on the last green in the next match, the Anglian Shield looked like it could go either way. Bloomfield and Whiting halved their match and Sayers and Ridley lost theirs 3 and 1, with Morecombe & Staff three up with four to play, it looked like it was going to be all square at lunch, ,but the young team of James Watts and Kevin Lee from Essex won the last four holes to put the Essex team up by 3 1/2 points to 1 1/2 points at lunch.
Murton had a mountain to climb in the afternoon singles playing against 1 handicapper Louis Lazarus and was one up at the turn, but with dropped shots at the 12th and 13th Lazarus took a lead that he never surrended and won 3 and 2. Lee brought the first of the afternoon points home for Suffolk with an impressive win over Callum Hilton  (an ex Suffolk junior now playing for Essex).
The next three matches went to Essex with Whiting loosing 4 and 3, Bloomfield 5 and 4 and Seeley loosing on the last hole after a disasterous 17th hole in the right hand trees. Phillips then won 3 and 2, Staff narrowly lost on the 18th green, and Sayers got a half, after been 5 up with six to play. The afternoon was finished off with positive wins of 5 and 4 by Morecombe and 3 and 2 by Ridley.

TOBY SPINK WINS SUFFOLK JUNIOR MATCH-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

The junior Match-play Championship was held at Royal Worlington Golf Club on Thursday 11/Friday 12th August.

The first round matches saw surprise defeats for Sam Jaggard by Jasper Johnson by 4 & 2 and Mark Fosker at the hands of Max Hambling by 3 & 2.

Round 2 saw the Stroke Play Champion, Chris Vince, beaten at the 1st extra hole by an eagle from Toby Spink. Johnson continued his good form to beat James Markham by 2 & 1, Hambling beat Waring 4 & 3 and Cottrell overcame Kyle Proctor, after a hard fought battle, at the 20th hole.

The Semi-Final line up saw Spink against Johnson and Cottrell versus Hambling.

Spink was in dominant form to beat Johnson by 7 & 6 whilst Cottrell edged through 2 & 1 after a close match with Hambling.

The final produced an excellent match with both players performing well, however Spinks's putter was red hot and evenually he ran out the winner by 3 & 2.

Spink from Felixstowe Ferry has only been playing golf for just over 2 years and has already reduced his handicap to 5 (4.8) His father Alastair, a PGA professional, will have to perform well if he is to finish above him in the  Suffolk Open Championship which is to be held at Halesworth Golf Club this coming weekend.

4/8/2011- SUFFOLK BOYS REACH THE JUNIOR ANGLIAN LEAGUE FINAL

Suffolk Boys overcame Norfolk and Cambs in the Junior Anglian League Triangular qualifying tournament which was held at Bourn Golf Club, Cambridgeshire.

The match was played in appalling weather conditions with continuous rain throughout the day.

Suffolk established a slender lead after the morning foursomes. The afternoon singles were reduced to 9 holes because of the conditions and it was only possible to complete the match through the efforts of the club's green staff who were continuously sweeping water from the greens.

Suffolk finished with 15 points, Norfolk 11 and Cambs 10.

Mark Fosker achieved a maximum winning both his foursome matches with Josh Cottrell and both of his singles, a feat not matched by any other player in the tournament. Both Connor James and James Markham achieved birdies on the final hole to win matches and secure vital points for the team.

Suffolk Boys now meet Leicestershire and Rutland Boys in the final to be played at Eaton Golf Club, Norwich on 15th August.
