SUFFOLK UNDER 14'S v SUSSEX UNDER 14'S

.

Suffolk Under 14's who played host to Sussex Under 14's at Rookery Park.

Back Row- Mike Stevenson, Chair Suffolk Junior Golf, James Higham,Jack Levermore,Laurence Staff,Will Morcombe, Lewis Whiting and Ian Woodhead, Under 14's manager.

Front Row- Joshua Driver, Michael Gee, Jack Cuthbert, Sam Byford, Andrew Salmon and Connor Talbot

The match started with 5 games of 9 hole foursomes and by lunchtime Suffolk were trailing by 5 points.  Whiting and Morcombe suffered a narrow defeat in the first group, however, none of the other matches ever looked to be heading Suffolk's way. The biting cold north wind with occasional rain, sleet and hailstone flurries made controlling the ball a necessity and Sussex's control of the ball was far superior to Suffolk's.

The afternoon singles continued in the same way with Sussex finding fairways and greens in regulation with the majority of the Suffolk boys chasing the game from the first hole. Lewis Whiting off 4.8 handicap achieved a good half with Cameron Henderson from Royal Ashdown Forest. There were wins for James Highham, Jack Levermore and Michael Gee and a tremendous half for Sam Byford who came back from 3 holes down.

The Suffolk boys have a lot of work to do over the next 2 months before competing in the Keith Bass Trophy ( 4 Counties) and Essex.

  MATCH TOTAL 7.5 2.5

The match was set up well with the first four matches very evenly matched. Playing match-play off scratch the last six matches had Suffolk looking hot favourites.

The first match saw Joshua Murton (captain) produce a very good performance to beat Nathan Jackson 4 & 3 and in the second match Jack Phillips won two out of the last three holes to get a commendable half against Tom Forster. Christopher Lee had a convincing 4 & 3 win over Jamie Sandford and Lewis Whiting lost his grip on his game, loosing the 17th hole to give Cambridge's Cameron Shakespear their second half of the afternoon. Jordan Bloomfield started poorly and was soon four down against David Marris and although his game improved Marris held on to win 4 & 3. Jed Seeley played good golf to beat Toby Carr 4 & 3 while Will Morecombe give away a three shot lead to give Cambridgeshire another half  point against Jai Patel. The last three games all went Suffolk's way with wins for Ben Sayers 2up, Laurence Staff 6 & 5 and Marcus Ridley 1up. Sayers win was even more pleasing especially after he had been 5 down at one point during his game.

Ian Woodhead

After 6 years at the helm Ian Woodhead has stepped down as Suffolk under 12's manager to concentrate his efforts on the Under 14's.

During this time Ian has been responsible for bringing through many players who have subsequently gone on to represent the County at under 18 and senior level. Mike Stevenson, Chair of Suffolk Junior Golf, praised Ian for his dedication and committment. John Morecombe has agreed to step into the role and we wish him all the best for the future.

On the hottest October day for many years the Suffolk Under 12's came up short against a more experienced Cambridgeshire team. In glorious sunshine at Newton Green the Cambridgeshire team took an early 2 shot lead in the foursomes, only to be pegged back by Everett & Hurrens half, Watts & Clough win and Iveson & Frickers half.

With a 1 point advantage after the foursomes Cambridgeshires lead teams soon put another 2 points on the board to give a 3 points lead after the first 3 singles matches. With wins for Orris, Everett and Hurren the match was all square with 4 singles matches left. The last 4 matches all went the way of Cambridgeshire and they recorded their first win against Suffolk in the six matches that have been played in the last 3 years.

The Under 12's Suffolk team has been managed by Ian Woodhead for the last 6 years. this was his last match as manager and the new role now passes to John Morcombe, allowing Ian the chance concentrate more of his time to the Under 14's squad.

SUFFOLK UNDER 14'S v NORFOLK UNDER 14'S

On a very wet day in Sudbury, Suffolk hosted the annual under 14's match against Norfolk at Newton Green Golf Club. With a very much changed team Suffolk started positively with a 3 & 2 win in the foursomes for captain Joshua Murton & partner Jed Seeley, however Jai Gayle and Christopher Lee lost 3 & 2. Suffolk were back leading 15 minutes later when Jordan Bloomfield & Lewis Whiting had a convincing win 3 & 2, which again was followed by a defeat for Will Morcombe & Laurence Staff. The result of the morning foursomes rested on the shoulders of the two new team members Michael Gee & Jack Cuthbert. The match could have gone either way and eventually was halved, leaving the teams sharing the spoils after the morning foursomes.

The start of the afternoon singles saw the sun come out and the match resumed without umbrellas and waterproofs, this was not to last long and by the time the players had got round to the 10th the heavens had opened. This did not dampen the spirits of the more experienced players and Murton, Whiting, Bloomfield and Staff soon recorderd positive wins and with halved matches for Lee and new boy Cuthbert the result looked to be going Suffolk's way. The remaining two matches saw 2 & 1 victories for both new boys Jai Gayle and Michael Gee, Gayle's result even more outstanding as he had been four down at half way.

The excellent performance of the three new boys, Cuthbert, Gee & Gayle bodes well for the future.

Support was given by the County President Mike Rees and Junior Chairman Mike Stevenson.

Suffolk boys were thwarted in their attempt to retain the Junior Anglian League title when they went down by 8-4 to Leicestershire and Rutland boys at Eaton Golf Club, Norwich.

The morning foursomes were extremely closely contested with Suffolk winning one game, the other 3, whilst all going to the 18th green, resulted in wins for Leicester and Rutland.

Suffolk boys tried hard in the singles, but a combination of a hot day and fatigue following an exremely busy schedule saw them only manage wins from Chris Vince, Sam Jaggard and Guy Mummery.

ESSEX v SUFFOLK - The Anglian Shield ( Under 14 County Match at Harwich & Dovercourt)

The Suffolk team narrowly lost to Essex on a day that they should have won the Anglian Shield for the first time in ten years. After a very positive start from Murton & Seely with a 2up win in the foursomes and a narrow defeat for Phillips and Lee on the last green in the next match, the Anglian Shield looked like it could go either way. Bloomfield and Whiting halved their match and Sayers and Ridley lost theirs 3 and 1, with Morecombe & Staff three up with four to play, it looked like it was going to be all square at lunch, ,but the young team of James Watts and Kevin Lee from Essex won the last four holes to put the Essex team up by 3 1/2 points to 1 1/2 points at lunch.
Murton had a mountain to climb in the afternoon singles playing against 1 handicapper Louis Lazarus and was one up at the turn, but with dropped shots at the 12th and 13th Lazarus took a lead that he never surrended and won 3 and 2. Lee brought the first of the afternoon points home for Suffolk with an impressive win over Callum Hilton  (an ex Suffolk junior now playing for Essex).
The next three matches went to Essex with Whiting loosing 4 and 3, Bloomfield 5 and 4 and Seeley loosing on the last hole after a disasterous 17th hole in the right hand trees. Phillips then won 3 and 2, Staff narrowly lost on the 18th green, and Sayers got a half, after been 5 up with six to play. The afternoon was finished off with positive wins of 5 and 4 by Morecombe and 3 and 2 by Ridley.

TOBY SPINK WINS SUFFOLK JUNIOR MATCH-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

The junior Match-play Championship was held at Royal Worlington Golf Club on Thursday 11/Friday 12th August.

The first round matches saw surprise defeats for Sam Jaggard by Jasper Johnson by 4 & 2 and Mark Fosker at the hands of Max Hambling by 3 & 2.

Round 2 saw the Stroke Play Champion, Chris Vince, beaten at the 1st extra hole by an eagle from Toby Spink. Johnson continued his good form to beat James Markham by 2 & 1, Hambling beat Waring 4 & 3 and Cottrell overcame Kyle Proctor, after a hard fought battle, at the 20th hole.

The Semi-Final line up saw Spink against Johnson and Cottrell versus Hambling.

Spink was in dominant form to beat Johnson by 7 & 6 whilst Cottrell edged through 2 & 1 after a close match with Hambling.

The final produced an excellent match with both players performing well, however Spinks's putter was red hot and evenually he ran out the winner by 3 & 2.

Spink from Felixstowe Ferry has only been playing golf for just over 2 years and has already reduced his handicap to 5 (4.8) His father Alastair, a PGA professional, will have to perform well if he is to finish above him in the  Suffolk Open Championship which is to be held at Halesworth Golf Club this coming weekend.

Full scores are under Suffolk Match Play Championship.

Suffolk hosted the Skevington Trophy at Diss Golf Club. This is an under 16 event involving Suffolk, Norfolk Essex and Bedfordshire. It is an individual competition, with each County entering 6 boys, and is played over 27 holes.

Only 4 players recorded an all day nett score of better than standard scratch (104) The runner up in the Skevington Trophy with 111  was Austyn Cambden (pm gross 70) also from Essex who beat 2 other Essex team mates Jack Phillips and Bobby Keeble and Will Shackleton, Beds, on countback.

Suffolk's best afternoon performance was recorded by Paul Waring who shot 73. The lowest all day gross was recorded by Jasper Johnson with 112 and he also had the best all day nett of 104.5

It was recognised that this is essentially a team event in view of which Mike Stevenson, Chair of Suffolk Golf, agreed to donate a trophy which will be contested by the 4 participating Counties from 2012.

4/8/2011- SUFFOLK BOYS REACH THE JUNIOR ANGLIAN LEAGUE FINAL

Suffolk Boys overcame Norfolk and Cambs in the Junior Anglian League Triangular qualifying tournament which was held at Bourn Golf Club, Cambridgeshire.

The match was played in appalling weather conditions with continuous rain throughout the day.

Suffolk established a slender lead after the morning foursomes. The afternoon singles were reduced to 9 holes because of the conditions and it was only possible to complete the match through the efforts of the club's green staff who were continuously sweeping water from the greens.

Suffolk finished with 15 points, Norfolk 11 and Cambs 10.

Mark Fosker achieved a maximum winning both his foursome matches with Josh Cottrell and both of his singles, a feat not matched by any other player in the tournament. Both Connor James and James Markham achieved birdies on the final hole to win matches and secure vital points for the team.

Woodhead and Bartrum take the Junior Foursomes title

Adam Woodhead (Newton Green) joined up as a late replacement with Chris Bartrum (Diss) and the pair duly took the Suffolk Junior Championship title at Ipswich Golf Club on Wednesday last.

The pair returned a scratch score of 73, overtaking their playing partners Lewis Last and Kane Mayes (Fynn Valley) who scored 75.   It was a fitting end to the junior careers of Woodhead and Bartrum who have become regular members of the County squad this year

Long time leaders in the clubhouse, Sam Truman (Woodbridge) and Blaize Esmond (Aldeburgh) finished in third place with a gross 76.

Chairman elect Mike Stevenson presented the prizes.

Suffolk Junior Order of Merit

The final event of the 2010 Suffolk Junior Order of Merit was decided at Newton Green yesterday where 81 juniors contested the club’s junior Open event.

The Newton Green event itself was won by Sam Truman (Woodbridge) with a gross 73.

There were numerous possible outcomes of the County’s Order of Merit with at least four players in contention at the start of the day.

Close contender Josh Cottrell (Ipswich), one point behind the overnight leaders Robert Salter (Ufford Park) and Chris Vince (Ipswich), was not in the field but Suffolk Junior Champion Mark Fosker (Felixstowe Ferry) and Chris Barturm (Diss) had a chance of winning if other scores went in their favour.

The two leaders did not improve their scores with gross 77s, giving them a fifth place finish in the Newton Green event.   Early news of Fosker was promising and a win could have given him a share of the title.   However, he could not match Truman’s 73, returning a 75 and keeping him in fourth spot.

Suffolk Vice-President Ron Kent presented the David Houston Salver to joint w inners Vince and Salter at the end of the competition.

Rushmere win the Handicap Cup

Rushmere won an exciting final to take the Suffolk Junior Handicap Cup, beating a gallant Thorpeness team by 4 points to 2.   Chairman elect of Suffolk Junior Golf Mike Stevenson presented the cup to Rushmere Team captain Kieron Hogarty and praised both teams for a very sporting encounter.

The match started in heavy rain and finished in near gale force winds.

Rushmere will now go forward to the regional qualifier of the Junior Home Nations Championship, to be played at Orsett on 27th September.    Success there would lead to the English Final.   Further success

Suffolk Under 14s v Essex

Monday 23rd August at Newton Green.

Final Score:   Suffolk 4 : Essex 11

After torrential overnight rain throughout Suffolk the weather changed and the match started on time at 10a.m.  In a match that normally sees a run away victory for Essex, the Suffolk boys started well and went into lunch only one point behind Essex with a score of 2 against 3. With drawn matches for Johnson &  Mann, and Cantwell & Hunn, Staff and Phillips managed to secure a 1up win in the nine holes foursomes.

With confidence high Suffolk started well in the afternoon matches and were leading in several of the matches after nine holes. The longer hitting and accuracy of the Essex team finally won through with the Essex team winning 7 of the 10 afternoon singles matches. With halved matches for Johnson & Staff the result of the afternoon belonged to Ryan Hunn as he beat Chay Robinson 5 & 4.

Essex won on the day by 11 points to 4, a score that did not reflect the improvement that has been made in Suffolk junior golf at this age group. Many of the matches could have gone either way over the last 2 or 3 holes and for a while we did have the Essex team on the back foot.

The season has come to an end for many of these under 14’s players but I know all of them will be a credit to the county over the next few years as they now all progress to the Under 16s

Rookery Park juniors at Malton

21st and 22nd August 2010.

Having won the Suffolk Junior Club Team Championship, three players from Rookery Park travelled to Malton and Norton Golf Club in Yorkshire for the English Junior Club Team tournament.

With 33 Counties sending their qualifying team, the tournament was won by Boston (156) with Hull in second place (154) and Crondon Park third (150). Rookery  Park (140) finished in a creditable 18th place.

There were some notable performances among the teams that didn’t feature in the chase for the title. After scoring 34 points in round one, Calvin Sherwood from Rookery Park in Suffolk signed for 39 points off five handicap with an amazing back nine of 24 points after coming home in 32 strokes, four under par.  He birdied the tenth then went par, birdie, birdie, birdie and finished with 4 pars.   “I got used to the greens in the end”, he said modestly.

Rookery Parks individual scores were:

Sam Jaggard 34 + 33 = 67

Calvin Sherwood 34 + 39 = 73

Guy Mummery 25 + 30 = 55.

EGU - South East Group - Junior Foursomes 2010.

Redlibbetts Golf Club, Kent

18th and 19th August 2010.

Suffolk Boys got off to a flying start in the EGU South East Region Foursomes at Redlibbetts Golf Club in Kent when they claimed a massive scalp by beating the holders, Surrey, and halved with Middlesex on the first morning. Jack Cardy and Chris Bartrum won both their games whilst Josh Cottrell and Chris Vince beat their Surrey opponents, and halved with Middlesex. Adam Woodhead and Murray Rose were beaten by both counties, but Suffolk scored 3 out of 4 points to be in third place after the first round of matches.

Unfortunately their form did not continue and they failed to win another match. On a number of occasions they found themselves in a winning position but allowed games to slip away from them, which was very disappointing. Team Manager, Trevor Mason, tried ringing the changes with the pairings on the second day, but all to no avail. The Suffolk boys were unable to reproduce the form they showed at the start and they slipped down the table to finish in last place and are therefore relegated with Sussex so will not take part in next year's competiton.

Suffolk scores

Beat Surrey 2 and 1, halved with Middlesex, lost to Kent 2 and 1, lost to Essex 2½ to ½, lost to Hampshire 2 and 1, Lost to Hertfordshire 2½ to ½, lost to BB&O 2 and 1, lost to Sussex 2 and 1

Four Essex players were struck down by a mystery illness at the end of the first day and had to return home.   Essex continued with only two pairs and did not win another match but had accumulated sufficient points on the first day to avoid relegation.

Suffolk Boys win Anglian League Championship

Having beaten Cambridgeshire and Norfolk in the qualifying round at Fynn Valley, Suffolk travelled to the Leicestershire Golf Club to play Lincolnshire in the final on Monday, 16th August.

Suffolk Boys made an excellent comeback from being 3 - 1 down after the morning foursomes to take the title.

In form Josh Cotterell and Mark Fosker teamed up for the only win in the Foursomes, by overwhelming their opponents 6 and 5. Two of the other matches went to the final green, but Suffolk left themselves a mountain to climb in the afternoon singles.

The situation looked bleak when Matt Haynes holed a 40 foot putt from off the green for a birdie at the 17th to beat Cottrell but then the Suffolk Boys came in with some impressive wins to keep the match alive. Jack Cardy, Chris Bartrum and Adam Woodhead, each in their last year as Juniors, drew on their experience to record convincing wins whilst James Markham, representing the County for the first time at this level, showed what a good match player he is by defeating an opponent with a much lower handicap 3 and 2. This left three matches on the course at all square approaching the final hole. 16 year old Fosker, also in his first match for the Under 18s, held his nerve to record an excellent win on the last green to put Suffolk in charge and Murray Rose halved the last to remain at all square and secure the victory. By the time Chris Vince reached the 18th tee the match was over and the loss of the hole did not affect the overall result.

Team manager, Trevor Mason, said " The boys showed great determination to come back from a losing position. It was very tense towards the end and they should be very proud of their performance”.
