12/6/2011
The Suffolk Amateur Championship was held at Hintlesham Golf Club and attracted a field of 71 players with handicaps of 6 or better.
The morning round saw 2 players, both juniors, Sam Jaggard (Rookery Park) and Chris Vince (Ipswich) return 70's , the Hintlesham course par being 72, whilst Nathan Overton (Hintlesham) carded a 69 and Adrian Meredith (Hintlesham) a 68.
In the afternoon conditions deteriorated with the early starters having the best of the conditions. Sam Debenham (Hintlesham) recorded a 70 which saw him take an early lead which he held until Overton returned a 73. Meredith could manage no better than 77 whilst James Reiss (Aldeburgh) added a 70 to his morning 77.
Conditions continue to worsen with heavy rain leaving the greens virtually unplayable. Indeed the competition would not have been completed without the efforts of the Hintlesham greenkeeper and County President, Mike Rees.
Unfortunately the adverse conditions were mainly responsible for Suffolk Junior Chris Vince dropping 3 shots over the closing 3 holes and carding a 73 for a total of 143- one shot worse than the eventual worth winner Nathan Overton.
T Titcombe, a 5 handicapper from Bury St Edmunds, took the all day handicap prize recording scores of 73 gross- net 68 and 76 gross-net 71 on 139 from 2 players on 140 - Jaggard (Rookery Park) and Chris Wright (Bury St Edmunds)
The Champion Team with a total score of 430, 12 better than Ipswich who finished second, was Hintlesham, Overton 142, Debenham 143 and Meredith 145. They will go to Scarcroft, Leeds later in the year and represent Suffolk in the national finals.
Nathan Overton will also represent Suffolk at the County Champions tournament which is to be held at Woodhall Spa in mid September.

The Suffolk Amateur Foursomes Championship was held at Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club attracting a field of 46 pairs.
Although bright and sunny a strong wind, coupled with hard ground, due to lack of any substantial rainfall for over 4 weeks, made conditions extremely difficult and this was reflected in the scores where no one was able to break par.
The morning round saw David Quinney and Chris Vince( Haverhill and Ipswich) record a good 70 followed closely by Jack Cardy and Phil Westley(Hintlesham) 72 and David James and Danny Western(Gorleston) 73.
The wind in the afternoon was stronger in view of which the score of 71 carded by Jimmy Price and Billy Macleod (Felixstowe Ferry) was remarkable and gave them a total score of 147 (am 76) this being good enough to move them into 2nd place overall.
Quinney and Vince carded an afternoon round of 76 for a total of 146 and victory by 1 shot.
Suffolk Seniors Champion, Roger Taylor and partner Stephen Whymark had rounds of 75 and 75 to take 3rd place from Cardy and Westley 72 and 79.

Soanes is Suffolk Order of Merit Champion
With the final event of the series at Bungay & Waveney Valley cancelled due to insufficient entries, Chris Soanes (Rookery Park) has been declared the winner of this year’s competition.
A tense finish was in store at Bungay, with Hintlesham's Phil Westley just 1½ points behind the leader but the decision not to run the event left Soanes as the outright winner.

Rookery Park capture the Parks Trophy
On a blustery day, Rookery Park won a tense and narrow victory against Woodbridge at Purdis Heath yesterday to take the Parks Trophy for the first time.
David Porter, standing in for indisposed team Captain Mike Rees, partnered Chris Lay in the opening game and the pair delivered a 5-holes victory over Geoff Sheldrake and Malcolm Crissell to get Rookery Park off to a good start.
However, Woodbridge hit back, taking the next two games.
Woodbridge’s Chris Ginn and John McIven were made to fight all the way by Andy Crisp and Bob Barnes, winning by just one hole to reduce the deficit to four.
Woodbridge followed up with a 7-holes win in game three, Dick Barton and Barry Smith getting the better of Rookery’s stand-in Captain Gerry Moore and Glen Kemp, giving Woodbridge a lead of 3 holes.
Brian Jillings and Ralph Flatt stood firm for Rookery Park in game four to win by 5 holes against George Courtney and Nick Leek to give their team victory by just two holes.
The match was played in an excellent spirit
Presenting the prizes, Suffolk Vice-President Ron Kent congratulated Rookery Park and suggested that, despite Woodbridge’s second defeat in the Parks final in three years, the club could at least take consolation in having already won the Stenson Shield and were due to appear in the final of the Tolly Cobbold Cup on Sunday next.
He spoke of the competition’s founder Maurice Parks’ foresight in recognising the growing force of senior golfers in the present-day golfing community and expressed everyone’s disappointment that Mike Rees could not be present but wished him a very speedy recovery.
Rookery Park, top left and left to right: Chris Lay, David Porter, Andy Crisp, Bob Barnes, Gerry Moore (Captain), Glen Kemp, Brian Jillings, Ralph Flatt and John Pawsey (seniors captain).
Woodbridge, lower right and left to right: Geoff Sheldrake, Malcolm Crissell, Chris Ginn, John McIven, Dick Barton, Barry Smith, George Courteney, Nick Leek and Brian Harmer (Captain).

Clean sweep for Hintlesham trio at Fynn Valley
The Duncan Masters, one of the Suffolk Amateur Order of Merit competitions, saw Hintlesham players taking the first three places at Fynn Valley Golf Club today.
Nathan Overton, currently off +1, continued his recent impressive form winning the event with a gross 141 and duly being presented with the coveted Green Blazer by Fynn Valley Captain Peter McCartney (left).
Phil Westley, off 1 and one of the most consistent players in the County squad this year, finished three shots away in second place, thereby moving him into second place in the Order of Merit, just 1½ points behind leader Chris Soanes (Rookery Park), with just one event to be played.

The third Hintlesham member, Jack Cardy, also off 1, returned a 36-hole score of 146 to finish third.

The handicap section was won by Fynn Valley’s Paul Gray with a net 141, playing off 11 handicap.

Brett Vale win first County Trophy
Brett Vale won the Beaumont Trophy at Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club on Thursday, beating Ipswich Golf Club by 3 holes. It is the first County Trophy to be won by the Suffolk Club.
Suffolk President Mike Rees was on hand to get the matches under way.
Brig Archer and Brian Banks lost their match to Frank Mansfield and Jack Greenway 5 down but the two middle games put Brett Vale 3 holes ahead.
Danny Lumley and Barry Purse beat Richard Mason and Arthur Lilley 3 up and Terry Bright and Peter Bennett reversed the first match result beating Colin Potten and Richard Coleman by 5.
Alan Evans and Brendan Carragher ensured the Trophy made its way to Brett Vale, halving the fourth match with Roger Tibble and Alfred Reeve.
In the inaugural year of the competition, Ray Beaumont, who donated the Trophy and is a keen supporter of Seniors Golf was at Bungay to present the Trophy to the winners. Ray is also President of Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club.
Our picture shows the winning team, (left to right) Brendan Carragher, Jim Stewart (non-playing Captain), Peter Bennett, Terry Bright, Barry Purse, Brig Archer, Ray Beaumont, Brian Banks, Ken Burbridge (reserve), Alan Evans and Danny Lumley.

Taylor takes Suffolk seniors title.
Roger Taylor (Aldeburgh), new to the Seniors ranks this year, took the Suffolk Seniors Champioship at Haverhill on Tuesday but it was a close run thing, beating Ricky Ling (Rushmere) on countback. Both players returned a three over par score of 73.
A field of 51 cut up badly, as is often the case with this competition, with four withdrawals and one no-show creating five pairs on the course, never a welcome experience among a field of three balls.
Everyone who played was full of praise for the course set up by Head Greenkeeper Glenn Norris and his team, one competitor claiming the greens were the best he’d ever played on!
For the second time this year, Suffolk used its HandicapMaster software to produce the results and to upload them to the Central Database of Handicaps. This should mean that clubs should be able to post any handicap changes without having to wait for competitors to advise an “away” score.
The Michael Thomas Trophy, for the club with the best three gross scores was won by Haverhill, scores from Eamon Barham (76) Gerry Scott (76) and Dennis Harkness (79) proving two shots too good for frequent past winners Woodbridge.
Photography after the competition proved difficult for both photographers and photographed who wewre forced to take shelter under a giant umbrella as the rain had begun to lash down.

Double joy for Spraggs
At Hintlesham Golf Club today, Stowmarket amateur Patrick Spraggs added the Suffolk Open Championship to his Suffolk Amateur Championship victory at Purdis Heath in June.
Patrick needed a birdie at the closing hole to overhaul Fynn Valley’s Jamie Abbott, the Suffolk Open Champion in 2005 and a recent qualifier for the British Open. His score of 205 over the 54 holes was just good enough to take the title by one shot from Abbott.
Paul Barnard (Ipswich), a regular high finisher in Suffolk events, finished in third place on 209 with 2009 dual Champion Scott Brace one shot further away in fourth.
Tim Cooper, Professional at Newton Green, was best of four competitors finishing on 211.

Cottrell takes junior match play title
Josh Cottrell (Ipswich) won an exciting battle against Suffolk Junior Strokeplay Champion Mark Fosker (Felixstowe Ferry) to win the Suffolk Junior Match Play Championship at Waldringfield this afternoon.
In a match liberally studded with excellent golf shots from both players, Fosker went ahead at the first hole only to be reined back to level at the second. Cottrell won the par three third but was never more than one hole ahead until the 14th hole.
Then, with Fosker perhaps feeling the effects of the 54 holes played in the Open Championship at Hintlesham the previous two days, Cottrell eventually drew clear to win by 2 and 1 at the 17th hole.
Suffolk President, Mike Rees, who refereed the game, congratulated both players on some sparkling golf and a match played in a tremendous spirit. It brought great credit to the players and to Suffolk Junior Golf.

Junior Match Play victim of storms
With the afternoon final of the Suffolk Junior Match Play competition just about to commence, a severe storm broke over Waldringfield Golf Club, forcing the Union to abandon the match between 17-year old Josh Cottrell (Ipswich) and Mark Fosker (Felixstowe Ferry), aged 16.
Cottrell had reached his first final in this competition beating local player Kyle Proctor by 8 and 6. Proctor, aged 14 and playing off 9 handicap, put up a brave performance against Cottrell who plays off scratch. In the other match, 15-years old Sam Truman (Woodbridge) was unable to reproduce the birdie barrage which swept James Markham (Rushmere) out of the competition the previous day, and was beaten by Fosker, who plays off 3, by 4 and 3.
The final will now be re-arranged, taking into account the busy schedule of junior golf events and the players concerned in the coming weeks. The date and venue will be announced as soon as possible.

Woodbridge win Stenson Shield
Woodbridge won the Stenson Shield for the second time in the competition’s history by beating a gallant Rookery Park team by 7 matches to 5. After the match, Woodbridge Team Captain, Gary Seaman , paid tribute to his team which played every round away from home.
It was not the best of starts to the match for Rookery Park when the coach bringing the team and several supporters broke down at Martlesham. The team had to be ferried in by a flotilla of cars and a mini-bus so that the match could get under way.
The morning foursomes proved decisive, Woodbridge winning three of the four games, although Rookery Park hit back in the afternoon to take four of the eight singles, two of the matches only being decided in favour of Woodbridge over the closing holes.
The Competition was started in 1985 by Mr. Stenson , the owner of Thorpeness Golf Club and was at first an invitational event. It was subsequently handed over to the Suffolk Golf Union which has run it since.
Woodbridge won in 1987 but has had to wait another 23 years for the second victory. Rookery Park won three times, in 1989, 1993 and 1997.
Suffolk Golf Union Vice-President, Ron Kent, who presented the awards, congratulated both sides for an excellent match and for winning through to the final of the scratch competition, bearing in mind the wealth of golfing talent in the County of Suffolk now.

Savage takes Suffolk Match Play Championship
Andy Savage, a member at Ipswich, played solid golf over his home course throughout the weekend to win the coveted President’s Mashie and become the Suffolk County Matchplay Champion for 2010. John Maddock (Gorleston) pushed him all the way in the Sunday morning semi-final but the ex-County player finally succumbed 2 and 1. Savage is an ex-County player himself but gave up golf for family commitments and only resumed playing again a few years ago.
Luke Thompson (Rookery Park), only just out of the junior ranks, had a good tournament and defeated Louisiana collegiate Sam Forgan (Stowmarket) in the semi-final, Thompson’s putter glowing red hot throughout the match.
Savage took control of the final, going ahead at the fourth hole and never being headed. A brave effort by Thompson ended at the short 15th where Savage clinched the title.

Spraggs is Champion
Patrick Spraggs (Stowmarket), currently studying at Stirling University, returned home to Suffolk to lift the Suffolk Amateur Championship at Purdis Heath yesterday. It enhanced a fine golfing season which he is currently enjoying.
His 4 under par score of 140, over 36 holes, just pipped Paul Barnard (Ipswich) who had waited anxiously in the clubhouse for some two hours waiting for Spraggs to finish.
Despite a blip on the final hole where he dropped a shot, Spraggs got home as Champion whilst the unfortunate Barnard had to be content with second place for the third year running, finishing just one shot behind.
There was some compensation for Barnard, Ipswich winning the Team Championship and earning the right to play in the National Club Team Championship at Woodbridge in September. With the best three 36-hole scores from any club counting, Ipswich finished ten shots ahead of last year's winners, Hintlesham.
For all the 36-hole Championship scores, click here.
The Suffolk Match Play Championship will be decided over the same Purdis Heath course, on Saturday, 19th June starting at 9am, with the semi-finals and final scheduled for the following day, also starting at 9am. For the 1st round draw, click here.
