THE STENSON SHIELD
An Inter-club scratch knock-out competition shall be held each year open to all clubs affiliated to the Union.
The format for each round of the competition will be 18 holes foursomes match play in the morning and 18 holes singles match play in the afternoon. Play will be from the white tees.
Prior to commencement of the morning round, which will begin at 9.30 a.m., each competing club may nominate up to ten players from which a team of eight will be selected for the foursomes and for the singles.
In the event of a tie there will be a “sudden death play off between a nominated member from each side commencing at the 1st tee unless different holes for the play off have been agreed between the team captains before beginning the match.
The draw for each round of the competition will be made by the Match play Committee.
Scoring will be by matches, the side winning the greater number of matches being deemed the winner.
In the event of abnormal weather conditions preventing play in the afternoon singles, the outcome of the match will be decided on the foursomes result. If, however, play is curtailed during the afternoon singles and a winning result has been attained when the match is abandoned, that result will stand, with incomplete games being declared as halved. In the event of a tie in such circumstances the match shall be replayed as to be mutually agreed.
The name of the club first drawn will be deemed the course on which the match is to be played, unless altered by mutual agreement. A new draw will be made after each successive round. The semi-finals will be played on a neutral course. The final will be played on the course of the previous winners unless that club is in the final or the Match play Committee decide otherwise.
Catering facilities must be available for all competitors/teams at lunchtime. An evening meal will be optional and will depend on agreement or otherwise of both teams and the host club.
A member of a club is eligible to represent his club in any of the matches played during the competition provided the player has not previously represented another club in the same competition during the same year.
The captain of the winning side must notify the Match play Secretary and any other nominated person, of the match result as instructed. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
Entry into the competition will be subject to the acceptance of and compliance with the General Regulations of the union and as applicable to the Stenson Shield.
Team captains are not permitted to give advice. Advice may only be taken from partners or caddies as per Rules of Golf.
On the day of the match, practice on any part of the course, other than in areas officially designated by the home club as practice areas, is forbidden. Visiting clubs are responsible for ascertaining which areas are designated as practice areas.
All clubs entering the competition must be prepared for their courses to be used as a neutral venue for the semi-finals and final.
