HAMBRO AND TOLLY COBBOLD CHALLENGE CUPS
Inter-Club Knock-out Foursomes Competitions shall be held each year, open to all clubs affiliated to the Union
Clubs to be represented by eight players (4 pairs) for each cup. One substitute may be introduced for the afternoon matches, provided he has been named on the Match Result Sheet before the morning round commences. The player so named may not play on the course that day until his afternoon match commences.
Handicaps for the Hambro Cup to be no higher than 9. A player with a higher handicap may play but must play off 9.
Handicaps for the Tolly Cobbold Cup to be 10 to 18.A player with a handicap higher than 18 may play but must play off 18. A player with a handicap of between 10 and 18 who has played in previous rounds of the competition during the current year but reduces his handicap to below 10 is eligible to continue playing in the Tolly Cobbold competition providing he plays off his new reduced handicap.
Players must have an active handicap as at the date of the match. Please note
Team captains will be required to include team members CHD numbers on the result sheet before submission to the County Secretary.
Handicap qualification shall be the player’s playing handicap on the date of Round 1, whether the club has received a bye into round 2 or not.
Matches to be 36 holes, unless, prior to commencement, it is arranged to play 18 holes only. The final shall be 36 holes. Play will be from white tees.
Scoring will be by holes, not matches, the side winning the greater number of holes being deemed the winner. Handicap allowance is ½ of combined difference.
In a 36 hole match, after the first 18 holes, the order of play and composition of the players (including one substitute as in para 2 above) may be altered as desired.
A member of a Club is eligible to represent his Club in any of the matches played during the competitions, provided the Player has not previously represented another Club in that same competition during the same year.
No Player who has played in the Hambro Cup is eligible to play in the Tolly Cobbold Cup in the same year. On the other hand, a player in the Tolly Cobbold Cup team may be promoted to the Hambro Cup team in the same year.
The Draw for the competitions
The name of the Club first drawn will be deemed the course on which the match is played, unless altered by mutual agreement. A new draw will be made after each successive round. The semi-finals will be played on a neutral course .The final will be played on the course of the previous years winner unless that club is in the final or the Match Play Committee decide otherwise.
Matches to be played on the date notified. In default of which either or both teams may be scratched at the direction of the President.
Matches to commence at 9.30am on the appointed date except in cases where both Hambro and Tolly teams are playing at the same venue on the same day when the Hambro match will commence at 9.00am followed by the Tolly Cobbold match.
In the event of a tie captains will nominate a pair from their team to play sudden death commencing at the first hole unless different holes for the play off have been agreed between the team captains before beginning the match.
The Secretary or Captain of the winning team must notify the Match Play Secretary of the Union and any other nominated persons of the match result as instructed. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
Any match started and ultimately abandoned for any reason shall be replayed over 36 holes, unless it has been nominated to be 18 holes as per paragraph 4 above. However, this will not apply in the event that a result has already been achieved. i.e. one team is more holes up than remain to be played.
Postponed or abandoned matches shall be played on any day up to 7 days prior to the date of the next round of the competitions. Should either of the clubs fail to agree a date, both will be eliminated from the competition.
In the event of there being a dispute over the rules which cannot be resolved by the players involved or the Team Captains of the two sides, the County Referee or an Officer or member of the Executive Committee shall adjudicate, whose decision shall be final.
Entry into the competition will be subject to the acceptance of and compliance with the General Regulations of the Union and as applicable to the Hambro and Tolly Cobbold Challenge Cups.
The nominated course for the competition must be of such a nature and condition that it provides a fair test of skill in a match play situation.
Team captains are not permitted to give advice. Advice may only be taken from partners or caddies as per the Rules of Golf.
On the day of the match, practice on any part of the course, other than in areas officially designated by the home club as practice areas, is forbidden. Visiting clubs are responsible for ascertaining which areas are designated as practice areas.
Catering facilities must be available for all competitors/teams at lunchtime. An evening meal will be optional and will require the agreement of both competing teams, together with that of the host club when a neutral venue is used.
The Executive Committee may insist on a club drawn at home playing the match away, if any of the conditions are not met.
All Clubs entering the competitions must be prepared for their courses to be used as a neutral venue for the semi-finals and final.
