On Sunday the 5th of August the Suffolk U16 golf team traveled to Melton Mowbray Golf Club to take on Leicestershire & Rutland and Cambridgeshire in the Tom Finn Trophy. Suffolk were the two time defending champions so the pressure was on to retain the trophy once more.
With none of the 10 man team having played the course before the practice round the previous day proved to be vital. The course was short, at only just over 6000 yards, but was still tough. It was very tight and tree lined and there were plenty of risk and reward drivable par 4’s making strategy a key element for the day.
The squad was led out by George Fricker who secured early points for Suffolk to set the tone. There was a slight wobble as Suffolk player Luke Green was forced to retire early from the match with a serious injury putting Suffolk on the back foot. However, the team rallied well from this setback and Suffolk took an impressive 9 ½ points out of a maximum 10 points for the 5 first players to get as back on track. Suffolk’s dominant early scoring proved to be too much for the opposition with Suffolk coming out top and retaining the trophy once more.
All of the 9 finishing players for Suffolk contributed to the points with George Fricker, Taylor Crisp, Ryan Turnbull and Ben Newman getting maximum points for the team with additional strong performances from Max Weaver (captain) and Will Garland.
The final scores;- Suffolk 13 ½ points, Leicestershire & Rutland 11points, Cambridgeshire 5 ½ points
The trophy was presented by Mr Tom Finn. I would like to thank Mr Finn for his continued support to this competition as without him it would not be possible.
