Anglian League Junior Final

Suffolk boys lost to Leicestershire & Rutland 7.5 to 4.5 in the final of the Anglian Junior League which was played at Oundle Golf Club on Monday 18th August.

Suffolk fielded a young team which contained five members of the under 16 squad, including Jai Gayle, who was called in the night before the match due to sickness of one of the selected team. All acquitted themselves well against a strong Leicestershire & Rutland team. The experience can only stand them in good stead for future years. A 3-1 reverse in the foursomes left Suffolk with a sizable task in the singles and, despite some notable performances, they were unable to overcome their opponents.

George Copsey was the only Suffolk player to score maximum points which was a remarkable achievement in view of the fact that he was taken ill during the night before the match and was unable to eat any breakfast or lunch. Following a close win in the foursomes with Lewis Hague, who was making his first competitive County appearance, his health improved during the afternoon and he recorded a heavy win over Lloyd King in the singles.

There was some excellent golf played by both teams on a course which offered several birdies and eagle opportunities with some "risk and reward" driveable par fours. Lewis Whiting chipped in at the last hole to beat Coby Cartwright, a player who finished in fourth place in the MacGregor Trophy and is the current Leicestershire & Rutland Open Champion. Jed Seeley was three down with five to play and secured a win by winning the last five holes.
