BYFORD IS SUFFOLK AMATEUR CHAMPION
The Suffolk Amateur Championship took place at Gorleston Golf Club on Sunday 31st May. It attracted a field of 61 players. Conditions were miserable with steady rain throughout the morning.
The morning round saw Josh Cottrell, Ipswich, record a 70 followed by home player Danny Western on 72 and Jack Forgan, Stowmarket, and Sam Byford, Ipswich both on 72.
Both Cottrell and Western fell away in the afternoon after shooting 76 and 75 respectively. Danny Perring, Gorleston and Ali Hall, Halesworth, carded 70's in the afternoon with Paul Waring, Felixstowe Ferry and and Will Wright, Aldeburgh both 71's. However, Byford and Forgan recorded 72's which with their morning rounds of 73 left them tied for the lead on 145- one shot clear of Bartrum ( 74-72) and Cottrell.
Sam Byford took the title and the Todd Cup in a playoff winning at the second extra hole. Jack Forgan received the John Doe Salver as runner up.
Other prize winners were- Am Gross-Danny Western 72, Pm Gross- Ali Hall 70. The 36 hole handicap prize went to Daniel Crosby, Gorleston on 137 followed by Ben Aves, Bury St Edmunds on 140 and Graham Wardley, Cretingham 144
The scratch team shield was won by the Ipswich trio of Byford, Cottrell and Gregor Tait ( 75-79) on 445 one shot clear of last year's winners Diss who finished on 446. Ipswich now have the opportunity to represent Suffolk at the England Golf Champion Club tournament which will be held at Brancepth Castle Golf Club on the 12/13th September.
