England Golf- South East Group Boys County Qualifying

The euphoria of winning their section of the England Golf SE Group Junior League evaporated for Suffolk Boys three days later at the SE Group Junior Team Championship, held at Porters Park Golf Club in Hertfordshire, where they finished 10th out of 11 counties. In a 36 hole medal competition five of the six scores count in each of the rounds.

Despite being in 9th place after the first round Suffolk were only 4 shots behind the fourth placed county, but they were unable to improve their scoring in the afternoon. Josh Driver returned an excellent level par 70 in the first round but was not able to repeat it in the second round when he scored 79. Lewis Whiting was level par after 17 holes of the first round but, after driving out of bounds on 18, he scored a 5 over par 9 on the final hole. The boys were unable to reproduce the form they have showed in matchplay competitions this year on an excellent course, superbly presented for the competition.

Undoubtedly the biggest surprise of the day was +4 handicap England international Marco Penge returning a score of 12 over par in the first round. He made amends with a one under par 69 in the second round.

Hampshire won the competition and go on to represent the South East Group in the National final and Tom Jordan of Kent won the individual prize with a one over par score of 141 (73 - 68).

Suffolk scores: Josh Driver 149 (70 - 79), Jack Phillips 150 (75 - 75), Lewis Whiting 150 (75 - 75), Jed Seeley 155 (78 - 77), Gregor Tait (155 (76 - 79) Sam Byford 160 (78 - 82).
