Suffolk Boys had their best result for 6 years in the England Golf South East Group Boys Team Championship, finishing in 4th place of 11 counties, behind Essex, Hampshire and BB&O. Essex progress to represent the South East in the national final.
The competition was played at Copthorne Golf Club in Sussex where conditions were very wet under foot after heavy rain on the days before the event, however, the course held up well despite many puddles as a result of which the players were allowed preferred lies.Thankfully there was only light rain during the afternoon of the competition day. The event was played over 36 holes on a medal basis with five scores of the six team members in each of the two rounds to count towards the team score.
Josh Robertson enhanced his reputation by finishing in second place in the individual competition with a one under par score of 141. His 68 was the best of the afternoon rounds. Paul Waring was in third place after the first round with a score of one under par, however, he found the going more difficult in the afternoon to finish on 148. In his first competition at this level, and the only boy in the team not to represent Suffolk men this season, Gregor Tait put in an excellent performance to finish with a three over par score of 145. It seems that he reduces his handicap with every competition he plays! Jack Forgan and Lewis Staff ,like many players in the field, suffered at the 17th hole, where double bogeys were not an uncommon score.Jasper Johnson was unfortunate to rack up a triple bogey after losing a ball at the 8th in the afternoon. He still finished at 5 over par for the round.
The team can be proud of their performance finishing above much bigger Counties with many more clubs and many more players to choose from, including recent past winners Surrey, Sussex and Hertfordshire.
