Harston is Suffolk Matchplay Champion

The Suffolk Match play Championship was held at Bungay & Waveney Valley Golf Club on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th June. 16 players qualified from the Amateur Championship which was held the previous weekend.

The major surprise of the opening round was Trevor Hellyer's 1 up victory over Paul Waring, whilst Dean Fairweather and Luke Thompson were both taken to the 20th hole before securing victories over James Biggs and Ben Colemen respectively. Round 2 saw Jack Cardy beat Fairweather 8 & 7 with Rhodri Harston recording a win by 7 & 6 over Hellyer. Chris Bartrum, defending Champion, beat Ali Hall 1 up with Thompson making up the semi-finalists after a 4 & 3 victory over Danny Western.

The first semi-final saw Harston take early control, which he never relinquished, against Cardy, eventually securing a 4 & 3 victory. Meanwhile, Bartrum in the other match seemed to be cruising to victory standing 3 up with 5 to play. However, a spirited comeback from Thompson saw him level the match at the 17th. Both players had birdie putts at the 18th, however, Bartrum made his and Thompson narrowly missed to leave Bartrum the winner by 1 hole.

The final saw Harston storm into a 4 hole advantage after only 5 holes and whilst Bartrum battled gamely in an attempt to hang onto his title he was unable to make any inroad with Harston deservedly running out a 4 & 3 winner.
