Harvey Watts retains Junior Matchplay Championship
The Suffolk Junior Matchplay Championship was played at Bury St Edmunds Golf Club on the 24/25th August. The top 16 available players from the Suffolk Junior Championship making up the field.
Two rounds were played on the 1st day with Conal Downing, George Fricker, Alfie Halil and Harvey Watts progressing through to the semi-finals.
The semi-final matches saw Conal Downing defeat George Fricker 1 up and Harvey Watts beating Alfie Halil by the same margin.
In the final Downing went one up with a par at the second hole only for Watts to birdie the third to get back to level. He edged ahead again at the 5th when Watts had a bogey but was immediately pegged back to level after bogeying the sixth. A birdie at the par three 9th put Downing back ahead at the turn. A par by Watts was sufficient to bring the match back to all square and at the 11th Watts went ahead for the first time with a par.He then increased his lead with a birdie at the 13th. A par was enough for Downing to win the 15th and two excellent shots to the long 16th gave him a par to get back to level. They halved the 17th with pars but Downing saved his worst drive of the entire competition at the 18th where he put his ball into a bush on the right of the fairway. He was back on the fairway for four but failed to find the green and with Watts on the green for three Downing conceded the hole to give Watts a one hole win.
