Leicestershire & Rutland v Suffolk

Suffolk lost their Anglian League match against Leicestershire, last year’s champions, by seven matches to five at Stapleford Park near Melton Mowbray.

Honours were even after the well-contested foursomes. There were singles wins for Paul Waring, Monty Scowsill and Josh Driver.

Scowsill was two down with three to play against teenager Joe Hack who was runner-up in the Leicestershire Championship. Scowsill then won the 16th, 17th and 18th to come away with a memorable one-up victory.

Driver defeated Scott Wormleighton, an established Leicestershire player, 2 and 1. Waring, playing with confidence after collecting the silver medal in the Deaflympics in Turkey, beat Chris Brook 3 and 2.

Suffolk’s unluckiest loser was Gorleston’s Chris Duffy. He was one down on the 18th tee. Then he drove the green at the par four 363-yard hole. He went on to complete his birdie but 16-year-old George Raitt, on the green in two, sunk a long putt to deny Duffy a half.

Suffolk captain Jack Cardy lost 3 and 2 to Richard Wale, the reigning Leicestershire amateur champion, who was a late replacement for county captain Martin Anderson who has a wrist injury.

It was disappointing that Calvin Sherwood went down to Jack Billingham. This was a match that Suffolk hoped to win especially after Sherwood and Duffy had played so well in the foursomes.

James Biggs has had a good season but his 6 and 5 defeat against Jack Mayfield was one to forget.

In the last game Jack Forgan was up against Cody Cartwright, one of Leicestershire’s leading players. It proved too tough as assignment for the Stowmarket player.

Leicestershire were not afraid to play teenagers in their first team. Most counties adopt the policy that if they are good enough age does not matter.

Leicestershire had lost their previous match against Norfolk. Anderson said: “Of the defeat against Norfolk Anderson said: “It was a home match but most of our players seldom play Luffenham Heath so it was more like an away game.”
