Monty Scowsil beaten in the final of The Amateur Championship

The Amateur Championship is being played at Nairn Golf Club between the 14 -19th June. All competitors play 36 holes of strokeplay with the top 64 qualifying for the Matchplay phase of the Championship. Suffolk have 3 players entered, Monty Scowsill and Gregor Tait (Aldeburgh) and Habibul Islam (Ipswich)

Unfortunately Habibul failed to qualify after carding 77 and 79 for 156. Monty carded 75 and 71 for 146 leaving him in 46th whilst Gregor shot 71 and a superb 67 for a 4 under par total of 138 which saw him qualify in 3rd place.

The 1st round of the matchplay saw Gregor beaten on the last hole by Sam Bairstow (Hallowes Golf Club) Monty however progressed to the last 32 beating Frank Kennedy ( Trump Nat) 2 & 1 He subsequently beat Jensen Hull (Hever Castle) 2 &1 and Ben Quinney (Kings Hill) at the 2nd extra hole to reach the last 8.Scowsill went on to beat John Paterson (New Club St Andrews) in the quarter finals 3 & 2 and James Ashield (Delamere Forest) in the semi-final 2 holes.

The final saw Scowsill up against Laird Shepherd (Rye). Scowsill started the stronger making 6 birdies in the opening 18 holes and establishing a 7 hole lead at lunch. However Shepherd responded in the afternoon making 5 birdies to level the match at the 18th and then defeating Scowsill at the second extra hole.As Amateur Champion he will now receive invitations to play in The Open, US Open and Masters.
