The Suffolk Junior Championship was held at Bury St Edmunds Golf Club on Monday 8th August. There was 37 entries, 13 of which were only playing 18 holes in the Under 14' event.
It was extremely disappointing that many of the youngsters receiving County coaching did not take part.
After the morning round Habebul Islam, Ipswich led having returned a 2 over par 74.Will Morcombe, Aldeburgh shot 76 whilst Ben Tatum and Harvey Watts, both Newton Green, carded 77's.
Habebul had dropped 3 shots in the final 4 holes of his morning round and he started the afternoon in similar fashion when he was 3 over after the first 4 holes. He eventually carded a 78, although had he have checked his card more thoroughly it would have been a 77.
Sam Byford, Ipswich, had carded a somewhat disappointing 79 in his morning round leaving him 5 shots behind his Ipswich colleague. However, birdies at the 14th and 18th holes saw him shoot a 1 under par round of 71 in the afternoon to take the title by 2 shots. Byford previously won the Suffolk Amateur Championship in 2015.
Tom Auchterlonie, Woodbridge, shot a level par afternoon round of 72 aided by him holing a 100 yard plus shot on the 16th for a birdie.His total of 152 saw him finish in 2nd place, ahead of Habebul on count back.George Fricker, Ufford Park, finished 4th on 154 having carded an afternoon level par round of 72.
The Junior Team Shield was won by the Ipswich trio of Sam Byford, Habebul Islam and Angus Edmund on 473 from Bury St Edmunds on 486, Michael Gee, Max Adams and Ben Aves.
The draw for the Junior Match play Championship, to be held at Waldringfield Golf Club on the 26th August is- Sam Byford versus Ben Tatum and Tom Auchterlonie against Harvey Watts.
