Suffolk Seniors reach Southern Counties Foursomes Final
Suffolk Seniors were in action at Ely City Golf Club on Tuesday 12th July against Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Norfolk in an attempt to reach the finals which this year are to be played at Haverhill Golf Club on Tuesday 27th September.
The morning matches saw Suffolk collect 2.5 points with wins from Steve Mann and Graham Shillings and Mark Jackson and Andy Whittaker whilst Nigel Fosker and Giles Oates achieved a halve. Bedfordshire, last year's qualifiers held the lead with 3.5 points.
The afternoon started well with further wins from Mann and Shillings and Jackson and Whittaker both of which were against Bedfordshire. Roger Taylor and Garry Robinson secured a halve.Nigel Fosker and Giles Oates were beaten leaving Captain, Kevin Brooks and Trevor Hellyer to complete their match against the Norfolk pairing of Roger Finney and Michael Horley. Cambridgeshire had finished their matches with a total of 6 points and the Suffolk pair needed to win to force a tie which they did fighting back from 1 down with 4 holes to play to win 1 up.
Brooks and Hellyer had lost their morning match to the Cambridgeshire pairing of Neil Hughes and Terry Ryan by an 8 & 7 margin and were now pitted against them in a play off. The first 2 holes were halved. Hellyer found the green at the 3rd play off hole, the 178 yards par 3 15th, whilst Ryan's shot found the left hand rough from which they took a further 2 shots to get on the green leaving the Suffolk pair 2 putts from 6 feet for victory.
Final placings Suffolk 6 points (won at 3rd extra play off hole) Cambridgeshire 6 points, Bedfordshire 5.5 points, Norfolk 2.5 points
