Newton Green win the Suffolk Junior Team Championship

Newton Green won the County Junior Team Championship for the third successive year by beating Ipswich in a very close match at Bury St. Edmunds.

The match is decided on the combined Stableford points of three players and there was some excellent golf played which was reflected by the scores achieved, with only one point separating the teams.

The first pair on the course were Harvey Watts and Habebul Islam who both returned very good scores, finishing with 36 and 38 points respectively. They played the par five 14th particularly well, Watts with a birdie and Islam chipping in for an eagle.

Newton Green took a substantial lead of eight points overall after the second pair of Ben Tatum and Will Garland completed their round, with scores of 38 and 28.

The final pair of Oli Page and Ryan Goodarzi stood on the par five 18th tee with Ipswich's Goodarzi seven points ahead, meaning that Newton Green were just one point ahead in the match. Goodarzi, who had been long and straight from the tee all afternoon, found the middle of the fairway and County Under 16 Captain, Page, was in the trees on the right. Page then found himself in the rough on the left and Goodarzi was in a greenside bunker for two. Page played a superb pitch over a tree and a bunker to about 5 feet and Goodarzi played an equally impressive bunker shot to a similar distance from the hole. Goodarzi, who received a shot on the hole, lipped out with his putt giving him three points for a par. Page was left with a putt for a birdie to also score three points and to win the match, which he duly dispatched.  It was a tense, thrilling, finish watched from the clubhouse balcony by many parents and supporters from both clubs. Page finished with 34 points and Goodarzi with a very impressive 41, the best score of the day.

Newton Green will represent Suffolk in the English Junior Champion Club competition at Woodhall Spa in August.
