Western is Suffolk Match Play Champion

The Suffolk Match Play Championship was held at Gorleston Golf Club over the weekend of 13/14th June. The top 16 players from the Amateur Championship qualified to take part.

Round 1 saw wins from Luke Thompson |(Rookery Park) against Jack Forgan (Stowmarket) 3 & 2, Alastair Hall (Halesworth) 2 & 1 against Monty Scowsill (Woodbridge), Josh Manser (Gorleston) 2 up against Josh Cottrell (Ipswich), Jasper Johnson (Woodbridge) 1 up against Paul Waring ( Felixstowe Ferry), Josh Driver (Diss) 7 & 5 against the Suffolk Amateur Champion, Sam Byford (Ipswich), Danny Western ( Gorleston) 3 & 2 against Ben Aves (Bury St Edmunds) Chris Bartrum (Diss) 4 & 3 against Danny Perring (Gorleston and James Biggs (Diss) 3 & 1 against Alex Taylor (Southwold)

In Round 2 Hall beat Thompson 4 & 2, Manser overcame Johnson 1 up, Western beat Driver 5 & 4 and Bartrum beat Biggs 1 up.

The Semi-Finals took place on Sunday morning, both finishing on the 17th green, Ali Hall defeating Josh Manser 2 & 1 and Danny Western beating Chris Bartrum also by 2 & 1.

In the final Hall took an early lead with a birdie at the opening hole and doubled his advantage at the third. After nine holes he held a one hole lead. After halving the 10th and 11th Hall went 2 up with a birdie at the 12th. Western then replied with birdies at the 13th, 15th and 16th and his par at 14 was good enough to see him take 4 holes in a row. The 17th was halved leaving Western the winner and Suffolk Match Play Champion for 2015 by 2 & 1.
