Suffolk Under 14's v Essex Under 14's ( Anglian Shield)
Suffolk Under 14 boys took on Essex at Crondon Park Golf Club in the annual, end of season, Anglian Shield match. They were hampered by losing two players from their team of 10 on the day, due to illness and a misunderstanding, which meant conceding a point in the nine hole foursomes.
Essex generously loaned Suffolk two players to ensure that two matches were not conceded and meant that all their boys had a game in the eighteen hole singles matches.
Suffolk boys nevertheless put up a good show, losing by a margin of 9 - 6, considering that they fielded three players who are still in the Under 12 age group, Tyler Weaver (Bury St Edmunds), Henry Meadows (Flempton) and Harry Brinded (Thorpeness), and were missing their three of their lowest handicap players.
Weaver and Joe Ford (Southwold) won their foursomes and singles matches to gain maximum points and Ben Newman (Rookery Park) had a convincing singles win. Meadows had an engrossing singles match which fittingly finished all square - the only match to go to the eighteenth green. A special mention is deserved for Josh Altham (Rookery Park) whose handicap has recently reduced to 20 from 24 and was the highest handicap in the Suffolk team. He scored half a point with his club mate, Jarred Landsdale, in the foursomes and put up a good fight to lose only 2 down in the singles.
