SEACROFT RECORD BREAKERS

Every May, Suffolk send 11 players to the glorious Seacroft Golf Club in Skegness to compete in the Eastern Inter Counties Foursomes and this year was no different. Suffolk felt they had taken a strong team with good balance and chemistry, crucial when you consider the extremely high standard of golf ahead for a long 72 holes of triangular foursomes. A nice mix of experience and four rookies meant an exciting 48 hours were in store and they didn’t disappoint.

Saturday morning saw the first of four sessions. Suffolk faced a Lincolnshire side they’d learned a lot about at felixstowe the week before and Cambridgeshire known dark-horses in this event. A slightly lacklustre start and a sparkling performance from the strong Lincolnshire team meant Suffolk gained only 3.5 points from a possible 10. The morning highlight being the experienced pair of Jack Cardy and Will Wright getting both their points which included the scalp of Lincolnshires captain.

Saturday afternoon would require more points if Suffolk were to even dream that night of competing on the Sunday. A slow start again vs Norfolk and Northamptonshire as Suffolks top 2 pairs came in empty handed. A great rally from the remaining 3 pairs provided a glimmer of hope including maximums from rookie partnership Sam Renville and Connor Talbot and again from Jack and Will. Scotland international Gregor Tait got his first 1.5 points on the board with partner Josh Robertson. 5.5 points and a total for the day of 9 still meant our work was cut out.

Max and Ben

Sunday morning would require something special as Essex and Bedfordshire stood in our way. But something special we got. Top pair Ben Sayers and Max Weaver set the tone by dominating both opponents to take their 2 points. Jimmy Price and Russel Oakey added another 1.5 points with a strong performance whilst Gregor and Josh had really started to click, 2 more. New boys Sam and Connor contributed another point proving they belonged in this team. Meanwhile, Will Wright and Jack Cardy were brewing something special with another 2 victories maintaining a 100% record with just one round remaining. 8.5 points Sunday morning is the best we can remember from a Suffolk team and suddenly we were tied for second place.

Also tied for second was Leicestershire and they were up next for the confident Suffolk side. BB&O (one team made up of Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxon) were only one place behind and made up the triangle in session 4. This was a tough session and with Lincs now out of sight this match was seen as the race for second. Max and Ben went about setting the right example again dismantling more opponents and taking 2 points. Russell and Jimmy met tough pairs and despite a great battle couldn’t add to their morning tally. Gregor and Josh managed to flip both their matches late on to shock their opponents and steal all the points again. Connor and Sam were brave but couldn’t beat some top quality opposition meaning the race for second was all on one match. Eyes turned quickly to Suffolks 100% club.

The 100% Club

Could Jack and Will make history twice by guiding Suffolk to second? - the best ever finish in the event.

Could they also be the first Suffolk players ever to get 8 points from 8?

Of course they could, a monumental effort.

The 6 points Suffolk took from the afternoon meant there wasn’t enough available for Leicestershire and BB&O. Suffolks total of 23.5 was still a way shy of an exceptional Lincolnshire team but enough to create a bit of history and provide great encouragement for the future.

Well Done Team Suffolk!
