Habebul is Suffolk Amateur Champion

Stowmarket Golf Club were the hosts to the Suffolk Amateur Championship which was played on Sunday 9th June. 71 players took part and with a one tee start the last groups were only beginning their afternoon rounds around 4 pm in the afternoon. The course was in excellent condition and the organisation superb.

Eighteen year old Habebul Islam (Ipswich) became the new Suffolk Amateur Champion. The England Boy's international won the Todd Cup with a birdie at the first play off hole against the experienced Sam Debenham (Hintlesham) Both players were on the green in three at the par five opening hole at Stowmarket, Debenham's  10 foot putt narrowly missed before Habebul kept his nerve to sink his pressure putt from eight feet.A large crowd followed the players and would have felt for Debenham, a former Stowmarket member, who lost in a play off to James Biggs at Rookery Park last year.

Habebul's first round of two under par 67 left him two head of Will Wright (Aldeburgh) and Andy Cunningham (Bury St Edmunds)James Biggs (Diss) and James Reiss (Aldeburgh) were both five shots behind whilst Debenham had to make up six shots in the second round.

Debenham was four under par after chipping in at the 13th hole and beginning to look a likely winner. He went on to card an afternoon 66 whilst Habebul managed a 73 leaving the pair tied on 139.

Biggs finished third on 142 with Cunningham fourth on 143 from Reiss and Wright on 144.

Hintlesham took the Club Team Shield, their team of Jack Cardy, Sam Denham and Ben Sayers finishing one shot ahead of the Ipswich trio, Habebul Islam, Luke Green and Chris Fleming. They will have the opportunity to represent Suffolk at the English Champions Club tournament which will this year be held at Romford Golf Club on the 21/22 September.

Islam, Biggs and Scowsill will be competing in the 124th Amateur Championship Run by the Royal and Ancient at Portmarnock and The Island this week.
